Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions Lake Forest homeowners ask most before starting a garage project.

General Questions

Is the design consultation really free?
Yes, with no obligation to move forward. It’s the only way to give you accurate pricing and a real design based on your specific garage, rather than a generic estimate.

What areas do you serve?
Forge Garage Systems proudly serves Lake Forest and the surrounding North Shore.

Do I need to be home for the consultation?
It helps, since we’ll want to see the space directly — but in some cases we can work from photos and measurements instead. We’ll walk you through what’s needed when you call.

How long does a typical project take, start to finish?
Most projects move from consultation to completed installation within a few weeks, depending on scope and design complexity.

Do you offer financing?
Ask about available options during your consultation — we’ll walk you through what’s available for your project.

What’s included in my price — materials, installation, or both?
Your quote includes both materials and professional installation. Anything additional is always reviewed with you before work begins.

Cabinets & Storage Systems

How much do custom garage cabinets cost?
Most Lake Forest projects run between $3,000 and $8,500, depending on size, materials, and configuration. See our full Cost Guide for a breakdown by project type.

What are the cabinets made of?
We use durable, professional-grade materials built to withstand normal garage conditions. Specific material and finish options are reviewed during your consultation.

What’s the difference between a full storage system and just cabinets?
A full system combines cabinetry with wall storage, overhead racks, and sometimes a workbench area, planned together as one coordinated layout. Cabinets alone are just one piece of that.

Can I start with one component and add more later?
Yes — many homeowners start with cabinets or overhead storage and expand over time. We design with future additions in mind.

Overhead Storage

Is overhead storage safe for a standard garage ceiling?
Yes, when installed correctly. Racks are mounted into structural framing and rated for the weight they’ll carry — both confirmed for your specific garage during your consultation.

Will overhead storage interfere with my garage door?
No — clearance around the garage door track and swing path is checked and planned around before installation.

Slatwall

What is slatwall, exactly?
A grooved wall panel system that accepts interchangeable hooks, baskets, and shelf brackets, so you can hang and organize items without planning permanent locations in advance.

Can I rearrange the layout later?
Yes — accessories can be repositioned along the panel as your storage needs change, without new holes or hardware.

Workbenches & Workshop Space

Do I need a lot of space for a dedicated workbench area?
No — workshop spaces scale from a compact single-wall bench to a full dedicated zone, based on what your garage can support.

Can outlets and lighting be added as part of the project?
Yes — power and task lighting are often part of a well-planned workshop area and can be reviewed during your consultation.

Garage Gyms

Do I need a separate garage just for a gym, or can it share space with parking?
It can share space — many conversions are designed to work alongside parking or storage, with equipment stored efficiently enough to serve both purposes.

What kind of flooring is best for a garage gym?
Rubber flooring or interlocking tiles are common choices, since they protect the floor and equipment and are more comfortable to train on than bare concrete.

Closet Systems

How is a garage closet different from garage cabinets?
Cabinets are generally built to enclose and protect tools and equipment. A closet system is built around hanging, folding, and shoe storage — categories a standard cabinet layout isn’t really designed for.

Is this a good option if my garage is also our main entry into the house?
Especially so — a closet system is often the most-used addition for garages that double as a mudroom, giving coats, shoes, and bags an organized place right where you use them.

New Home Setup

Should I wait until I’ve lived in the house a while before designing a garage system?
Not necessarily — some homeowners plan before move-in so the system is ready day one, while others prefer to live in the space briefly first. We’ll talk through what fits your timeline.

My new home’s garage already has shelving from the previous owner. Should I keep it or start over?
That depends on condition and whether it fits how you actually plan to use the space — we’ll assess it during your consultation.
